The term 'literacy' is described as the capacity to be able to read, write, listen as well as comprehend, and speak a language. In other sense, the word literacy means the skills to read and write at a level necessary for communication to take place. Literacy is to learn so as to allow the people to attain their goals and to increase their knowledge as well as potential.
A non-profit organization,known as Literacy India was developed in the year 1996 .Its main goal was teach underprivileged children and women and taking steps to make them self-sufficient. This objective has been met educating the underprivileged children and making them learn a variety of skills like arts, science, technology and vocation, delivering the basic human values to children,the dignity of labour and self belief so that they are able to support themselves as well as their families.
The age of every person is identified and his previous academic history is checked and thereafter their aptitude is checked in Literacy India. A step by step program is present with personal grooming as the initial step and next ensuring their personal hygiene as well as cleanliness . Meals are also provided for about three days a week for increasing productivity along with confidence. Moreover, proper uniform is given to children along with books and a school bag that they take along.
Literacy day is celebrated on 8th September. Literacy need to be celebrated since there are around four billion literate people at present in the world. But still the main objective is to make every child, youth and adult literate. The combined effect of the ambitious goals, i efforts, insufficient resources and strategies, and underestimating the magnitude as well as the non simplicity of the tasks are some of the reasons for non-achievement of this objective.
